Chemical Behavior of Lanthanides

In lanthanides series, first few elements are quite reactive with calcium but with increase in atomic number, their reactivity is quite similar to aluminum.

  • Lanthanides when reacted with carbon in inert atmosphere, then there is the formation of carbides.On gentle heating, it combine with hydrogen. Lanthanides form halides in the presence of halogens on burning.
  • Lanthanides liberates hydrogen gas with dilute acids.
  • Lanthanides form oxides and hydroxides, M2O3 and M(OH)3 on heating with oxygen. But Ce is an exception which forms CeO2.
  • Lanthanides react slowly with cold water but rapidally with hot water.
  • Lanthanides form oxo salts with phosphates, sulphates and nitrates.
