Dispersed phase:
The discontinuous medium in which colloidal particles are dispersed all through the another substance and scattered light, is called the dispersed phase (also referred as internal phase).

Dispersion medium:
The continuous medium (solid, liquid or gas) in which the colloidal particles of dispersed phase is distributed, is called the dispersion medium (also referred as external phase). Dispersed medium consists of two phase system which do not mix with each other because of their different nature.
Ex: In a starch solution –
Starch – dispersed phase
Water – dispersion medium
The dispersed medium is present in excess like a solvent in a solution.
